Bug Fest

A friend of mine told me about a Bug Fest going on at the nature center near our house this weekend, so while Shane was working Saturday trying to finish up his big project that’s due Tuesday, I took the boys to check out the bugs.  If any of you know Landon at all, you will know that this was a big hit with him.  He has always been interested in bugs, and it is not uncommon for us to have a bug or two in some jar or container in our house.  Here is what the bug day was like:

When we first got there, Landon looked at several different dragonflies through the magnifying glass.  They also had containers with several “backyard” bugs that he liked looking at.

They had some big bugs on display from the zoo, including this African beetle and silk worm.  I had to pull Landon away from the silk worms – I think he would have stayed there all day petting it if he could have!

They also had a few crafts.  We made a popsicle stick dragonfly and some bug eyes.  Davis made some too but refused to wear them for the picture, of course.  He just wanted to look at all the bugs.

They had a cricket theater where they read bug stories, and then kids could come up and read a bug joke to the audience.  Landon wanted to go up and read one, and he did a great job, bug eyes and all!  We also went to an area where they had pond water in an aquarium, and you could look through a magnifying glass at all the bugs living in it.

They also had a few bug games, including this big rope spider web you could play on, and these leaves you could toss a frisbee-like bug at to try to land on the leaf.  I think the spider web was Davis’s favorite part.  He kept sneaking back over there when I had my back turned!

Finally, they had nets so you could go and catch a bug.  This was definitely Landon’s favorite part.  It didn’t take us long to find something, and we brought it home in a little jar.  Just what we need – another bug in a jar lying around our house!  :)

Wow, this is like a day in paradise for little boys! My Jaxon is fascinated by bugs and would have found this excursion extremely exciting! I really do think our boys should meet one day. They would be great buds!
