Pre-Surgery Thoughts

The rest of Friday, in preparation of Asher’s surgery, was a blur. The boys came up in the afternoon and met with the child life specialist.  She was wonderful!  She talked to them about Asher’s surgery in terms they could understand.  She gave them each a doll that had a hospital gown, and she gave them a mask, some syringes, gloves, and more.  They were so excited about them, and played with them for quite awhile even after they left.

Kelly also came up that afternoon with Christie, and they got to see Asher again before his surgery.

The day became a bit more stressful as Asher kept blowing his IVs, and they had to keep an IV in to give him his medicine that keeps the valve between his heart open.  We became more and more grateful that his surgery was scheduled for the next day, even though the thought of sending him off to surgery at moments became almost too overwhelming for me.  Shane was amazingly calm, and he reassured me more than once that this was the best thing for Asher, and the sooner he had his surgery, the sooner he could be on his way to recovering and doing better.

Finally, that evening, when it was dark and quiet in Asher’s room, we went in there and I fed him one more bottle.  We each took some time just to hold him.  The nurse was great and just left us alone to have a little time with just the two of us and him, something we hadn’t been able to have at all yet.  It was very calming and we both just felt so at peace about all that Asher would go through the next day, and we could feel Heavenly Father’s love for His precious little child.  It was a special moment I will always remember.
