December Snow Days

We had two snow days in December, which some years we go all winter without snow so it was exciting to have two a week apart!  The first one was while I was in the hospital getting a kidney stone blasted, so I don’t have pictures of that one.  It didn’t produce too much snow, but it did get school cancelled for two days. 

The next week, the Wednesday before Christmas break, it started to snow mid-afternoon.  Luckily, the kids had early release from school, so they were home by the time the snow started.  Unfortunately, Shane was still at work.  He tried to leave around 3:00, but after sitting in his car for 40 minutes and only making to two blocks, he decided he would just go back to work and try later when fewer people were on the road.  Everyone was trying to leave work at the same time to avoid the snow, but they all left too late and it made for a horrible commute home.  Shane was hearing from other colleagues that the normal 25-30 minute drive home was taking them three to four hours. 

By 7:00 p.m., Shane and his friend Jim decided that instead of driving home, they would run home.  They raided the clothing bin at work for some warm clothes and headed out.  I took them an hour and a half, it it was a little over nine miles.  They seemed to enjoy the challenge of it though, and made it home safely.

The next day, the boys had fun playing out in the snow.  The snow didn’t pack well to make a snow man, but they were able to sled down the neighbor’s driveway and make snow angels.  Asher went down for his nap right as it started snowing, so when he woke up, he was excited to see how much snow there was.  He jumped up and said, “Yes!  Now we can open our presents!”  After many tears as I explained that snow didn’t mean it was Christmas, he wanted to head outside and taste the snow.  “See Mom!  You go like this.  Did you try it?”  he told me as he stuck his tongue out to taste the snow.  He was also excited to make his first snow angel, and he made a few right away.  School ended up being cancelled the rest of the week, so we go to start our Christmas break a couple of days early.
