My mom’s birthday is the day after Veteran’s Day, so I always debate about going down to Ashland to celebrate with her since the kids are out of school that day. This year was her 60th birthday, so we decided it would be fun to make the trip. Unfortunately, Veteran’s Day was right in the middle of the week, so we couldn’t take advantage of the weekend days off, but we drove down Tuesday night and came back Thursday afternoon on her birthday. When I told Camille and Stacey our plans, they decided to come along with us. We caravanned down together, arriving a little after 9:00 p.m. The kids all quietly stood at the door and rang the doorbell, exclaiming “happy birthday” and singing to her as we walked in.
Wednesday, the kids had fun hanging out and playing all day. Shane and my dad came home for lunch (Shane was working up at my dad’s office for some quiet), and they watched the kids while we went to Senor Sam’s for lunch.
That night, we had dinner together and then gave mom her present. We had compiled a book with pictures and memories of her that all the kids, grandkids, her siblings, and my dad had written. It was fun to read all the memories everyone had and to see their pictures with Mom.
We then surprised her again and took her to Lark’s restaurant for some dessert with her friends. It was a great night, and we had fun visiting together and celebrating her birthday. Once again, Shane came through and babysat all the kids, even getting them to bed, while we were out.
Thursday we didn’t do too much. Stacey and Camille left just after lunch, so we had cupcakes at lunch and sang Mom happy birthday before they left. Shane finished his work day and we left late that afternoon. It was a quick trip, but so fun to get together and celebrate her special day.
